Tottenham’s Jess Naz condemns racist abuse after League Cup match

Tottenham Hotspur forward Jess Naz has spoken out after receiving racist abuse on social media following her side’s Subway Women’s League Cup clash with Aston Villa.

The England international revealed she was targeted with offensive messages after being substituted at half-time in Tuesday’s game.

“I was going to wait till after the game to speak because I’m done being quiet. I was subjected to racial abuse in my DMs [direct messages]. Racism in any form is unacceptable and [it] is important to address this behaviour and ensure that steps are taken to prevent it from happening again,” Naz posted on her Instagram Stories.

Spurs responded swiftly with a strong statement of support for their 25-year-old striker.

“The club is disgusted by the racist abuse received by Jessica Naz via social media. Jess has spoken out against this disgraceful behaviour – and we stand by her in calling out this unacceptable and cowardly act. We are working with the appropriate authorities and social media platforms to identify the responsible party, and we will be taking the strongest action against them.

“There is no place for racism in our sport or anywhere in society. We stand with Jess.”

Naz, who celebrated her 25th birthday yesterday, has been with Tottenham for most of her career apart from a short spell at Arsenal. She has represented England across all youth levels and made her senior Lionesses debut in 2024.

Her courage in speaking out highlights the ongoing battle against racism in football, and her club’s response underlines a united stance in driving change.
