Flick hails ‘super-sub’ Lewandowski after Barcelona’s comeback win over Oviedo

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has heaped praises on Robert Lewandowski, following his impact in the club’s comeback win over Real Oviedo on Thursday.

Lewandowski, 37, started the match against the newly-promoted side on the bench, but put Barca ahead just five minutes after coming on in the second half.

The Poland striker had seen his role limited this season, due to his age and fitness concerns, but continues to prove his worth to the Catalan giants with another inspiring display.

After coming on in the 65th minute, the 37-year-old headed in a cross from Frenkie De Jong, to put his side in the lead in the 70th minute.

“It was important, this is what we know from Robert. He’s one of the best in the world in the box. We’re happy we have him”, Flick said after the match.

“I always say to the team, we start with 11 and finish with maybe five different players. The most important thing is everyone gives 100% for the team.

“When Robert comes on, you can feel he wants to change the result. Not only about the goal, but the dynamic it gave us in the match. It was great to see this.”

Real Oviedo had taken a shock lead in the first half, when Alberto Reina pounced on an error by Barcelona’s goalkeeper Joan Garcia, to score into an empty net from 40 yards.

Eric Garcia drew the visitors level early in the second half, with Lewandowski and Ronald Araujo scoring further goals to complete the comeback.

“I didn’t yet see the goal because when you’re on the pitch, you’re focused on your job,” Lewandowski said, relishing his role as a super-sub.

“I saw the corner or left side of post, I don’t want to say empty, but if I put the ball there I thought it’s possible. The cross is amazing and I know the space is there.

“It was a very important goal. I knew if I came on I had to do something, try and score the goal.”

Barcelona are back in action on Sunday, when they host Real Sociedad in the Spanish La Liga, before playing host to PSG in the UCL on Wednesday.
