Sergio Ramos had nothing but words of praise in his warm message to Sergio Busquets, following the former Barcelona midfielder’s retirement from professional football.
Busquets confirmed on Friday that he will call time on his playing career at the conclusion of Inter Miami’s ongoing MLS season, bringing the curtain down on a glittering journey spent largely in Barcelona.
Throughout his career, Busquets was a central figure in one of football’s fiercest rivalries, regularly clashing with Ramos in countless El Clasico encounters.
No player has featured in the iconic fixture more than the Spanish midfielder, who amassed 48 appearances in the showdown between Barcelona and Real Madrid.
At club level, Busquets enjoyed lots of success during his spell at Barcelona, collecting nine LaLiga titles, three Champions League trophies, and numerous other honours that cemented his legacy as one of the finest holding midfielders of his generation.
His influence on the pitch extended to the international stage, where he often lined up alongside Ramos for Spain.
With 143 caps, the third-most in La Roja’s history, Busquets played a pivotal role in Spain’s golden era, lifting the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and adding the 2012 UEFA European Championship two years later.
“Busi, you are the definition of how to be exceptional without ceasing to be a regular guy,” said Ramos in an Instagram post.
“A rival most of the time, a team-mate on many other occasions, you have always stood out for your classy football, vision, and quality, as well as for your humble and authentic way of being.
“Football loses one of the brightest midfielders I’ve played with, but you leave with the recognition and gratitude of all those who have shared time with you and of all those who love this sport.
“Thank you for being a great player, a great team-mate, and a great friend. I wish you the best in your new chapter.”
