Mikel Arteta has provided fresh updates on Arsenal’s squad fitness ahead of Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Arteta confirmed that captain Martin Odegaard is in line to return after training with the squad in the coming days.
“Martin will be training with us the next two days, so hopefully he’ll be available for the game,” the manager revealed.
Bukayo Saka also remains in good shape following his midweek outing in the Carabao Cup. The winger played 63 minutes in Arsenal’s 2-0 win at Port Vale before being replaced by youngster Max Dowman. Arteta explained that the substitution was part of a pre-agreed plan.
“Yeah, nothing to report there. I think he played the games that we anticipated, he did well, he feels good and he will be training the next few days.”
However, there is still uncertainty surrounding Noni Madueke. The forward came off at half-time in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City last weekend and has yet to undergo a scan.
Arteta confirmed: “The scan hasn’t yet taken place.”
Elsewhere, Arsenal remain without Piero Hincapie (groin), Kai Havertz (knee) and Gabriel Jesus (knee), with no fresh updates on their returns.
With key players edging closer to fitness, Arsenal will be hoping for a strong performance as they aim to extend their unbeaten run against Eddie Howe’s side.
