Pep Guardiola hails Jeremy Doku’s display following Man City’s rout of Burnley

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was impressed with Jeremy Doku’s performance in his side’s 5-1 thrashing of Burnley on Saturday.

The Cityzens romped to a convincing win over the newly-promoted side in the English Premier League on Saturday afternoon, as they continued their way up the table.

Erling Haaland (2), Matheus Nunes (1) were on target for the home side, while Clarets defender Maxime Estève scored two own goals to complete the win.

Doku played a huge role in the first goal, getting past his man into the box and firing a shot which was blocked and then turned in unfortunately into his own net by Estève.

Jaidon Antony equalized for the visitors in the 38th minute, after his effort deflected in off Ruben Dias past Gianluigi Donnarumma in the City goal.

“I ask the wingers in the final third to go one vs. one or one vs. two and I have the feeling that Jeremy’s decision-making in the final third improved, like, wow! Comparing to the past, he made an assist to Erling and sees the channels”, Guardiola hailed Doku’s decision making after the match.

“He’s an incredible threat against teams that are a low block and deep. Jeremy is really important. When the team is transitional maybe he can struggle a bit but he had the ball and brought the opponent to the box.”

City came out much improved in the second half and took the lead in the 61st minute through Nunes, before Haaland added gloss on the victory with two late goals, the first of which was set up by the brilliant Doku.

The Belgian forward has shown signs of improvement this season, and now has three assists in his last three outings for the club.

“Now he is reading good. When Jeremy goes there for the second goal, two or three opponents go there”, Guardiola continued.

“They don’t allow him to go one vs one because he’s unstoppable. There is no winger over 5-10 metres stronger than Jeremy — he can go left or right. Now he is reading when the opponents go two or three who the other man is to be free to create a cross or an extra pass. He improved a lot.”
