Inter Milan manager Cristian Chivu was in awe of Francesco Pio Esposito after the young striker’s performance in the Nerazzurri’s vital 2-0 Serie A triumph over Cagliari on Saturday.
Esposito, who came off the bench, opened his Serie A account with a crucial strike late in the game, adding to experienced Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez’s early opener to ensure a comfortable victory for Inter Milan away from home.
At only 20 years old, the Italian striker became the fourth youngest player to score a Serie A goal for Inter Milan in the 21st century. Interestingly, his brother Sebastiano is also on the list alongside Mario Balotelli and Davide Faraoni.
Speaking to Sky Sports Italia after the game, Chivu waxed lyrical about the quality Esposito possesses, albeit emphasizing the need to continue working hard to improve his all round game.
“We must not forget he is only 20 years old, he has his whole future ahead of him, he just has to keep working the way he is now.
“He’s got great quality, but also real margin for improvement, so he’s got to keep his feet on the ground.
“I admit, he is surprising me with how well he’s doing, as he plays for the team and knows how to do certain things, is not afraid of anything, keeps a cool head in front of goal, and I’m glad he managed to get his first goal. Maybe this can help him relax even more.”
After Saturday’s win, Inter currently occupy fifth place on the Serie A table, with nine points from five games. They’ll be hungry to maintain their winning momentum, having already suffered a couple of defeats so far.
