AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri praised his side’s doggedness after watching them battle to a crucial 2-1 victory over reigning Serie A champions Napoli despiting going down to 10 men early in the second half.
AC Milan flew out of the blocks, storming into a 2–0 lead inside half an hour thanks to a brilliant Christian Pulisic display. The American set up Alexis Saelemaekers for the opener before finding the back of the net himself.
The game turned when Pervis Estupinan received a red card for his foul on Giovanni Di Lorenzo, allowing Kevin De Bruyne to convert from the spot and set up a nervy finish at the Stadio Guiseppe Meazza.
However, Milan’s resolute defending thwarted Napoli’s relentless pressure with French goalkeeper Mike Maignan saving six of the Champions’ seven shots on target in a truly inspiring Man of the Match display.
“I am happy because this was an important and very difficult test against a quality Napoli side,” Allegri told DAZN Italia after the game.
“Our first half was great, the second unfortunately saw us down to 10 men. At least we managed to practice our defending, these are situations where you can be forced to give away scoring opportunities.
“The lads did really well, but this is just the beginning. We must enjoy the victory tonight, then from tomorrow start to focus on the next match before the break for international duty.”
“We’ve got to keep working, we made a small step forward today with a deserved victory against a strong Napoli. When you know how to suffer under pressure, it makes it easier to win if you have this kind of spirit.”
AC Milan, now level on points (12) with Napoli and Roma, currently top the Serie standings thanks to superior goal difference. Buoyed by the confidence of four straight league wins, Allegri’s men face another stern test against Juventus next weekend.
