Former Manchester United winger Antony has revealed why he prioritized a move to Real Betis over all other options, including a juicy offer from Bayern Munich, while plotting his exit route from Old Trafford.
Antony was deemed surplus to requirements at Manchester United upon the arrival of current head coach Ruben Amorim mid-way into last season with the Red Devils consequently shipping the Brazilian out on loan to Real Betis.
Upon joining Betis, the 24-year-old, who had been struggling for form in England rediscovered his major and virtually became the La Liga club’s best player for the duration of his loan spell.
At the end of his Betis loan, it was clear that Antony had no future at Old Trafford. Both club and player received several lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia and even Bundesliga champions Bayern but the Brazilian held out for a return to Betis.
Explaining his decision to turn down Bayern’s more attractive financial and sporting project, Antony revealed he basically chose his long-term happiness over money.
“I always look at happiness first, and I was very happy here,” Antony said by way of explanation.
“I know my children and my wife are happy here. Before making the decision, I spoke with my family; it’s an incredible city, and the people too. Not just the fans, but everyone.
“I looked at my happiness first, because I know that when I’m happy, things turn out well. Money is important, but happiness is much more important.”
Antony has endured a slower start to his second stint at Real Betis but he’ll be hoping that crucial 85th minute equalizer against Nottingham Forest in the Europa League is a sign of things to come.
