Woltemade makes Newcastle history in Champions League rout of US Gilloise

Nick Woltemade became the first player in history to score on both his first EPL start and UCL start for Newcastle United, when he led the scoring as they secured a 4-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday evening.

The Magpies headed into the encounter on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Spanish champions Barcelona in their opener, but recorded a stunning result to secure their first win of the competition this season.

Eddie Howe rang the changes to the starting lineup, with summer arrival Woltemade returning to the lineup after starting the defeat to Barcelona on the bench.

The decision proved fruitful minutes into the match, as the striker deflected in a strike from Sandro Tonali to put his side ahead.

It was the German forward’s third goal since joining the club in a £69 million deal from Stuttgart in the summer transfer window.

Anthony Elanga was in inspired form and having played a part in the opener, the Sweden winger was fouled in the area by Fedde Leysen, resulting in a penalty kick to the visitors.

Anthony Gordon kept his cool and slotted in from 12 yards to give his side a comfortable two-goal cushion at the break.

Gordon scored his second penalty kick of the game in the second half, becoming the first third Englishman to achieve the feat in a UCL game after Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane.

Substitute Harvey Barnes added a fourth for the Magpies with his first-ever Champions League goal, while also becoming the first substitute to score in the competition for the club.

The 4-0 result also marked Newcastle’s biggest-ever win in the UEFA Champions League, as they bounced back from an opening day defeat to register their first points of the season.

Up next for the Magpies is a clash against Nottingham Forest on Sunday in the English Premier League.
