Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has moved to calm concerns over Gabriel Magalhães, stressing that the defender should recover quickly from the knock that cut short his outing against Olympiacos on Wednesday night.
Gabriel had to leave the pitch with 15 minutes left in the Gunners’ eventual 2–0 win, burying his head in his hands in visible frustration. His reaction immediately sparked fears among supporters that the injury could be serious.
However, Arteta later clarified that the substitution was precautionary, reassuring fans that the Brazilian’s issue is not expected to be of great consequence.
“I think he’s going to be OK,” Arteta explained.
“I think it was a kick in the first half, and it was a bit uncomfortable. He could carry on but we decided not to take any risks because he’s played a lot of games.
“He’s coming back from a long-term injury and we need to look after him.”
Arsenal may have avoided a serious injury setback with Gabriel, but doubts remain over his availability for Saturday’s Premier League clash against West Ham United.
The Brazilian saw his 24/25 season brought to an abrupt end after suffering a hamstring injury in April. He has played every minute of the league campaign so far, but now faces the possibility of missing the Hammers’ visit to the Emirates.
Fortunately for the Gunners, defensive depth is not in short supply. Cristhian Mosquera stepped in for Gabriel alongside William Saliba against Olympiacos, while Riccardo Calafiori, though primarily deployed at left-back by Arteta, is also a reliable option in central defence.
