Bryan Mbeumo believes Manchester United will improve with time following a disappointing start to life in Ruben Amorim’s first full season in charge at Old Trafford.
Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation has come under the spotlight after United managed just nine wins in 33 Premier League games, with critics arguing the system doesn’t suit the squad. Despite the pressure, the Portuguese coach has remained adamant he won’t abandon the setup that previously brought him success at Sporting CP.
To help ease the transition, United recruited Mbeumo over the summer, banking on his ability to operate both as a winger and a striker. While things haven’t gone to plan so far, the Cameroonian forward believes the Red Devils can turn things around under Amorim’s guidance if given time.
“It’s exciting, because we get to learn to play with new players and it’s always challenging, but that’s what we like as footballers,” Mbeumo said in an interview with Sky Sports.
“Of course it will improve, we haven’t played a lot together, so there are certain things that we’re going to improve, and there are different types of players, but it’s good to be with them.”
Mbeumo also defended his manager amid relentless criticism of the 3-4-2-1 system, insisting that players need to step up and take some responsibility.
“It’s a little different for me. I’ve played this system in the past as well.
“Obviously, we hear a lot of things, but it’s our responsibility to find the good things and to be better. I don’t think there is anything about this system, it’s just us and improving in certain areas.
“I think everyone in the team needs to take responsibility. When you play in a club this big, everyone needs to know what to do. As a team, we need to do better.”
