Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has underlined the importance of long throws as his side prepares for their first-ever Conference League group-stage match against Dynamo Kyiv in Poland.
The Eagles stunned Premier League champions Liverpool at the weekend, with Eddie Nketiah striking late after Jefferson Lerma’s towering throw created chaos in the box. Glasner admitted the tactic is no accident and vowed Palace will keep using it as a key attacking weapon.
Bz”We practise it [long throws], it’s the chance to score a goal,” Glasner explained. “The advantage over a free-kick is that there is no offside. You have to defend a bigger space.
“Maybe that is why it’s a trend in England. More long throw-ins, more dangerous attacking situations and of course, we want to take advantage of it.”
Palace trained in London before flying out to Lublin, Dynamo Kyiv’s temporary European base due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Glasner reminded fans that long throws have shaped big moments before, recalling Jude Bellingham’s dramatic Euro 2024 goal against Slovakia which came after a flick-on from Palace captain Marc Guehi.
With history and recent success on their side, the Eagles will look to make the most of their direct threat as they chase a winning start in Europe.
