Ruben Amorim has maintained that Manchester United’s struggles have little to do with the way he sets up the team.
The Portuguese has been strongly criticized for his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, which is often very predictable and has left the team very exposed.
Last weekend’s 3- 1 defeat to Brentford marked the Red Devils third loss in six league games this season, leading to calls for his dismissal.
However, several reports have indicated that the former Sporting Lisbon manager retains the full backing of the board, despite the club’s poor form.
Manchester United play host to in-form Sunderland in a crucial fixture on Saturday and during his prematch press conference, Amorim was in full defense of his tactical approach.
“If we lost to Arsenal because of the system, it is your job [the media] to make the opinion,” Amorim told a news conference on Friday.
“When you look at the game against [Manchester] City, is the first thing you think when the game starts the system? I think you don’t think about the system in that moment.
And Brentford, the way we concede goals, the way we create chances, there is nothing to do with the system. That is my opinion.”
Amorim has the worst win rate of Man United’s manager post-Ferguson era, with only nine wins from 33 league matches.
The Red Devils have also failed to win consecutive games in charge since he took over from Erik Ten Hag almost a year ago.
“I am not saying this team would play better in a different system or not, that is not my point”, he continued.
“My point is, if I look at the games we didn’t win, the most important thing when I watch the game is not that we lost because of the system.
“That is my opinion and people have different opinions. That is OK”, the Portuguese concluded.
