Willy Caballero has backed Enzo Maresca following the Chelsea manager’s dismissal for his intense celebration in the Premier League win over Liverpool on Saturday evening.
The Blues netted a late goal, as they ended a run of defeats in the league with a stunning 2-1 result over the Premier League champions, sparking wild celebrations among the players.
Enzo Maresca, who had been booked in the first half, sprinted down the touchline after Estevao’s winner to celebrate with his players and received another booking afterwards.
The Italian was unable to perform his usual media duties after the match following his sending off, with his assistant Caballero taking over at the post match conference.
“It’s something special for any manager, no manager can hold inside what they feel. Unfortunately for him he was already on a yellow. We are all human beings. We have been players, we love to see that. For sure all of us we can learn from that as well”, Caballero said.
The Blues headed into the tie on the back of three winless matches in the league, while the Reds had suffered defeat in their last two in all competitions.
However, it was the home side who struck the early killer after Moises Caicedo fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner in the 14th minute.
Alexander Isak cushioned a cross from Dominik Szoboszlai into the path of Cody Gakpo, who fired in for Liverpool to make the scores level.
Chelsea were the better side and deservedly got their winner in the 95th minute, when Estevao Willian tapped in a cross from Marc Cucurella.
“He’s OK. He’s so happy now. Of course he cannot be here now but we are so happy that we achieved the three points in the last seconds”, Caballero added.
“We are so happy and so proud. The players did a fantastic job. Now is a good break for many of them and hopefully we can recover a few more players and start the new cycle of games with energy.”
Chelsea grabbed a first win in four league games and moved up to sixth on the standings, while Liverpool dropped to second after Arsenal had moved to first position after their 2-0 win over West Ham United.
