Real Madrid boss offers Mbappe update after injury against Villarreal

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has revealed that star forward Kylian Mbappe will have to undergo assessment by the French national team’s medical staff after suffering an injury setback in Saturday’s La Liga win over Villarreal.

Mbappe made his 12th straight start of the season for club and country, capping the run with a goal and an assist in Real Madrid’s final game before the October international break.

However, the mood inside the Santiago Bernabeu quickly shifted from jubilation to concern when the France international went down clutching his leg in visible discomfort.

Real Madrid’s medical team rushed onto the pitch to assess the 26-year-old forward before helping him to the touchline. Although Mbappe managed to walk off unaided, he headed straight down the tunnel with seven minutes remaining, sparking fears of a potential injury setback.

Speaking after the match, manager Alonso provided an update on Mbappe’s condition and addressed concerns over his fitness ahead of the international break.

“Kylian had some discomfort in his ankle and Franco has an overload in his hamstring,” Alonso said. “We will see, we will keep monitoring them.”

Pressed further on Mbappe’s chances of featuring during the international break, Alonso responded: “We can’t say if he will go with France or not.

“They will have to evaluate him in their national camp. If it gets complicated, he won’t be able to play, but right now we can’t say anything.”

While the latest setback may not completely rule out Mbappe’s involvement for France in the coming days, the in-form forward will likely play a limited role for Didier Deschamps’ side in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Iceland.
