Cape Verde one win away from historic FIFA World Cup Qualification

Cape Verde are on the cusp of history as they prepare to face Libya at the 11 June Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Sharks currently sit top of Group D, four points clear of Burkina Faso after back-to-back wins over Mauritius and Cameroon. With just two matches left, Cape Verde need only one more victory to seal their place at next year’s World Cup for the very first time.

Libya, meanwhile, still have faint hopes of progression. They sit third in the group, five points behind the leaders, and must win both of their remaining games while relying on slip-ups from Cape Verde and Burkina Faso to keep their dream alive.

After the hard-fought 1-0 win over Cameroon, defender Steven Moreira admitted the players and fans can already sense the significance of what lies ahead.

“We have done the most difficult part, now we have two games to focus on it, and hopefully we can enjoy it afterwards,” he said.

“We knew the game against Cameroon was very important, even if we lose one game we still have a big, big chance to qualify. You can see the people are very happy, proud and excited. Hopefully we will make everybody prouder in two weeks.”

Cape Verde now stand just one result away from the greatest milestone in their footballing history, while Libya fight to extend their journey in Group D.
