Georgia’s Sagnol hails Spain’s quality after defeat in World Cup qualifier

Georgia manager Willy Sagnol praised Spain’s quality, but admitted his side must improve ahead of their remaining qualifying matches.

The European champions showed their superiority as they defeated Georgia 2-0 in a Group E World Cup qualifying match on Saturday night, to move one step closer to securing a spot in the 2026 tournament.

The Spaniards were also 4-1 victors when both sides met in the 2024 European championships and continued their dominance with another comfortable win on Saturday.

“We can say we were very lucky to only lose 2-0, but it’s not just a question of quality. I saw some attitudes on the pitch that I had not seen before, and I did not like them,” said Sagnol.

“We could talk about Spain all night long. What we saw is the consequence of what Spanish football has done in the last 20 or 25 years.”

Spain dominated the entire match and enjoyed about 83% possession, racking up 24 shots, despite missing several key players due to injury.

Yeremy Pino scored the opener in the 24th minute, after a half-cleared corner fell into his path, before he fired home from close range.

Ferran Torres wasted a chance to double their advantage after he missed from the penalty spot, as Spain continued their stronghold on the match.

Mikel Oyarzabal doubled the advantage in the second half, firing in a free kick in the 64th minute past Giorgi Mamardashvili.

“They’ve started to produce very intelligent players. If you look at Pedri, he’s so light he could be blown away if it’s windy, but he’s one of the best midfielders in the world because he’s very clever and always puts the team first”, he added.

Spain remain top of Group E with maximum points from their first three matches, while Georgia are third with only three points.
