Chelsea’s young striker Marc Guiu has opened up on the reasons behind his surprise move from Barcelona to Stamford Bridge, pointing fingers at new Blaugrana boss Hansi Flick for his abrupt exit.
Guiu burst onto the scene at Barcelona when he made his professional debut against Athletic Club, scoring just 33 seconds after coming on.
Under then-manager Xavi Hernandez, the teenager joined a wave of academy graduates promoted to the first team, alongside Fermin Lopez, Pau Cubarsi, and Lamine Yamal.
However, Guiu’s fairytale rise quickly lost momentum following Xavi’s departure. The arrival of Flick as head coach brought uncertainty about his future, as opportunities for first-team action began to fade.
Speaking in an interview with TV3, Guiu shed light on the situation that led to his decision to leave his boyhood club for Chelsea, suggesting a lack of trust and clarity under the German tactician ultimately pushed him to take the bold step toward the Premier League.
“Honestly, I feel like I could’ve played a little more,” Guiu said, via Sport.
“But you could see the club had other projects. [Robert] Lewandowski was there and they’d just signed Vitor Roque. It was clear I had no place there.
“The only time I spoke with Hansi Flick, I remember, was during a play-off and he told me to do well. The truth is that I would’ve liked the manager to call me, but it wasn’t the case.
“In the end I understood the situation wasn’t good for me and I decided to leave.”
Chelsea acquired Guiu for €6 million last summer, and he has since scored six goals in 17 appearances. The striker began this season on loan at Sunderland, netting once in three games, before being recalled following Nicolas Jackson’s exit to Bayern Munich.
