Chelsea star Millie Bright retires from international football

Chelsea captain Millie Bright has officially hung up her England boots, calling time on a remarkable international career.

The Lionesses defender, who has been a rock at the back for nearly a decade, leaves behind a lasting legacy in the Three Lions shirt.

Bright was a standout figure in England’s historic Euro 2022 triumph, starting every match as the team lifted the trophy on home soil. She also wore the captain’s armband during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, leading the Lionesses all the way to the final in the absence of Leah Williamson.

Since making her debut in September 2016 against Belgium, Bright quickly cemented her place in the national setup. Her determination and consistency made her a mainstay in defence, even starting every match at Euro 2017. Over her stellar career, the 32-year-old earned 88 caps and scored six goals for her country.

“The reality of the last decade wearing the Three Lions has surpassed even my wildest dreams. It’s been beyond special for me and I wish it could last forever. However, in football all good things must come to an end and with that I have decided to retire from international football,” she said while reflecting on her journey.

“For me personally, it’s a decision I have taken to ensure I can commit fully to my club football and give Chelsea everything they need from me.

“I always want to leave places in a better place than you found it so what better time to step aside and let the next generation of Lionesses come through after what they achieved this summer. I know they will go on to achieve even greater things in the years to come and I’ll be their biggest fan.”

She added: “To all my team-mates, coaches, staff, friends, family and of course the fans, thank you. Your belief and support have meant the world to me and is something I’ll forever cherish.”

Bright’s announcement marks the end of an era for England, but she departs as one of the Lionesses’ most respected leaders. As she shifts her focus back to Chelsea, fans can expect her trademark grit and passion to continue lighting up the Women’s Super League.
