Gakpo confident Liverpool will “find a way forward” amid summer shake-up

Cody Gakpo believes Liverpool will “find a way forward” as Arne Slot’s side navigate a transitional season after a busy summer of change.

The Reds return to Premier League action on Sunday against Manchester United at Anfield, with Slot’s squad desperate to bounce back from three straight defeats against Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea. However, Liverpool still sit just one point behind league leaders Arsenal after seven games.

Speaking after a productive international break in which he scored three times for the Netherlands, Gakpo reflected on the adaptation process at Liverpool.

“I think it’s always been difficult when new players come in to adapt to the team,” he told Premier League Productions.

He added that adjusting to the departures of long-standing teammates has added complexity.

“We lost also a lot of players who were here [for] a long time. We were together for a few good years now. So, some players left, Lucho [Luis Diaz] left, Darwin [Nunez] left, Jarell [Quansah] left and Harvey [Elliott] left as well. Then you have to replace them and new players come in and you need to make it fit.

“It’s also a little unfortunate with Alex, who didn’t really have a pre-season,” he said. “We try to get to know each other every day better and better again… I think we will find a way forward.”

Liverpool fans will take comfort from the Dutch’s resolve. The squad’s talent is clear, yet patience may be needed as they reshape their style under Slot.
