Ange Postecoglou sacked by Nottingham Forest after Chelsea defeat

Nottingham Forest have sacked manager Ange Postecoglou after just 39 days in charge of the club.

The Australian was appointed in September as a replacement for Nuno Espirito Santo, but failed to win any of his eight games in charge.

The 60-year-old had been under pressure to deliver results, but Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in the English Premier League was his last bite of the straw.

Postecoglou’s reign at Forest now becomes the shortest permanent managerial reign at a Premier League club in history.

Postecoglou also struggled in the league with Tottenham Hotspur last season finishing 15th, but guided the club to their first major silverware in 17 years with victory in the Europa League.

“Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect.

The club will make no further comment at this time”, the Tricky Trees revealed in a statement 18 minutes after the defeat to Chelsea.

The former Celtic manager lost six of his eight games in charge of the club, including a shock exit to Swansea City in the Carabao Cup.

Postecoglou had needed to defeat Chelsea to stand any chance of remaining in charge of the club, but saw his side go down by three goals in front of their home fans.

Josh Acheampong opened scoring in the second half with his first senior goal for Chelsea, before Pedro Neto ended his goal drought with the Blues second.

Reece James piled more misery on the home side with a brilliant third for Chelsea, who had Malo Gusto sent off in the late stages of the match following a second caution.

Nottingham Forest are expected to begin the search for a new manager in the coming days, following the departure of Postecoglou, who becomes the only manager in the club’s history not to win any of their first eight games in charge.
