Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed that Bruno Fernandes will remain the club’s first-choice penalty taker, even after two high-profile misses this season.
Despite failing from the spot in matches against Fulham and Brentford, the Portuguese head coach insists confidence in his skipper remains unshaken.
Fernandes had earlier redeemed himself by converting a late penalty in United’s 3-2 win over Burnley in August. His wider record at Old Trafford with 23 goals from 29 attempts in the Premier League which still makes him United’s most successful scorer from the penalty spot in league history.
“No. I know that it’s not easy for him [Bruno] but I think he has 70 penalties, I think, and he misses like nine. Two with me so I’m really annoyed with that!” Amorim responded after being asked if the responsibility could shift.
“But he’s really confident. He’s training [on] the penalties, he’s trying to understand that people are watching the way he scores the penalties. So he’ll be ready. We have more guys also to score a penalty if he needs.
“[But] he’s the main taker. He scores a lot of goals, penalty is passing this moment. We have other options. Again, we can change, but I’m fully confident that Bruno will sort that out.”
With a critical fixture at Anfield against Liverpool on Sunday, the spotlight will remain on Fernandes and his penalty role. For now, Amorim’s message is clear: stability and belief in experience trump reaction to setbacks.
