Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany praised his team’s spirit after they battled to a gritty 2-1 Bundesliga victory over Borussia Dortmund to continue their perfect start to the season.
Goals from Harry Kane and Michael Olise on either side of the half time whistle put Bayern in cruise control and ensured that Julian Brandt’s late strike was merely a consolation goal for Dortmund.
The victory extended the Bavarians’ ongoing winning streak to 11 games while their opponents suffered a first defeat of the current Bundesliga campaign.
Speaking after the game, Kompany acknowledged his side’s grit and spirit, commending the players for digging deep and working together when things got a bit difficult during the match.
“Credit to the team that we’ve won the first 11 games, but obviously I want to win the next 11 too. And then the next 11 after that,” said Kompany.
“You also have to give Dortmund credit, they deserved to get back into the game in the second half. The first half was almost perfect from us, very dominant – we could’ve scored two or three more goals.
“Dortmund then battled in the second half. They were aggressive and, in my opinion, we played too slowly. We broke up our own rhythm.
“Nevertheless, without a cohesive team performance you don’t win a game like this. It wasn’t easy in the second half, but we defended pretty well and were always dangerous.
“That’s the key thing for me. It’s fine to have difficulties at times but you have to remain dangerous, and we were.”
With 21 points from seven league games, Bayern sit comfortably on top of the Bundesliga table. They’re five points clear of second placed RB Leipzig and will be looking to at least maintain the gap when they face Borussia Mochengladbach next weekend.
