Former Netherlands international Royston Drenthe has been hospitalised after suffering a stroke on Friday, according to representatives of his current team FC De Rebellen.
The 38-year-old ex-winger spent parts of his career with Real Madrid and Everton, among others.
“Last Friday, Royston Drenthe suffered a stroke,” announced the club on social media. “Drenthe is currently receiving good care and is in good hands. The team and those involved hope for a speedy recovery.”
The post added that Drenthe’s family has requested peace and privacy while he receives treatment.
Drenthe began his professional career with Feyenoord and moved to Real Madrid in 2007, where he won the La Liga title. He later had a loan spell at Everton in the 2011-12 season and also played for clubs including Reading and Sheffield Wednesday before retiring in 2023.
Former clubs, including Everton, have expressed support for Drenthe’s recovery.
