AC Milan midfield maestro Luka Modric was full of praise for teammate Rafael Leao after the Portuguese forward’s brace to ensure a vital 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in Serie A on Sunday.
Leao inspired the Rossoneri to a comeback win at San Siro, scoring a stunning curling effort from outside the box just after the hour mark, before calmly converting an 86th-minute penalty to seal the points.
His brace overturned Robin Gosens’ early opener and lifted Milan to the top of the Serie A table, prompting Modric to praise his teammate’s quality and influence in decisive moments.
“Rafa is really amazing. I was looking forward to playing with him. Unfortunately, he got injured quickly, but now he’s getting back to fitness,” Modric told DAZN Italia.
“This is the Rafa that we need. He’s an amazing talent, from outside when I used to watch him and now when I train with him, I see he is one of the best players in the world. The incredible thing is that he can still improve, it just depends on him.
“I hope these two goals can help him grow his confidence and be the main guy for us. He will be very important, and we will depend a lot on him. He showed why tonight.”
The Rossoneri are now top of Serie A but Modric is remaining calm: “Now we have to take it one game at a time, we are growing, showing character and quality, so we must continue like this.
“There is a long way to go, but we are on the right path, and when some players return from injury, we will be even stronger.”
AC Milan will be looking to consolidate their position at the summit of Serie A when they host newly promoted side Pisa on Friday.
