Eddie Howe has revealed that Sandro Tonali faces a late fitness test ahead of Newcastle’s crucial Champions League clash with Benfica on Tuesday night.
The Italian midfielder is struggling with illness and was absent from the team’s open training session on Monday. His availability remains uncertain as the Magpies prepare for a defining European fixture.
The 25-year-old was substituted after 70 minutes during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton, with Jacob Ramsey coming on in his place.
His absence could be a major setback for Newcastle, who are eager to bounce back from the weekend’s loss and regain momentum on the continental stage.
“Bit of illness with Sandro, so he’ll be touch and go for the game. He wasn’t there at training today and he is such an important player,” confirmed Howe to reporters.
“We have a really strong midfield this year; if one player is missing, then it’s an opportunity for another.”
Newcastle will hope Tonali recovers in time, as his presence has been vital in the club’s European campaign. However, with the squad’s depth in midfield, Howe remains confident that whoever steps in will be ready to deliver.
