AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri has made it clear that his side’s primary goal this season is to secure a Champions League spot, not to challenge for the Serie A title.
Despite sitting top of the Italian table after seven matches, Milan remain focused on maintaining consistency rather than contesting for the Scudetto. A win over Pisa on Friday could see them move four points clear of rivals Inter, extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to eight games.
Interestingly, in each of the four previous seasons in which an Allegri-led side collected 16 points from their first seven league fixtures, the Italian manager went on to win the Scudetto. However, the experienced Italian gaffer insists that his focus this time is on returning Milan to Europe’s elite rather than mounting a title challenge.
“Forget about that. The teams are different,” said Allegri.
“The important thing is to finish well, work hard with a low profile, stay quiet. What matters is winning matches.
“Winning is never easy. We want to take another step forwards and slowly head towards the tally that qualifies us for the Champions League.
“That is our goal. We need a minimum of 74 points. We’re not thinking about Napoli or Inter, we are thinking about [Pisa]. We have to keep our feet on the ground.”
Having suffered their only defeat of the season to newcomers Cremonese on opening day, Allegri is wary of Pisa, who themselves are also a newly promoted team.
“There’s more than pressure, there’s a complicated game as well,” Allegri added.
“Pisa, aside from against Bologna, have always played battling matches, scoring and have played well against teams like Napoli and Roma. We will have to go about it in the right way.
“There’s a bit of a taboo to dispel as well, as we have to do a bit better than we did the last time we played a newly-promoted team.”
