Arsenal sweat over Gabriel’s fitness ahead of Crystal Palace clash

Arsenal’s preparations for their Premier League clash with Crystal Palace have hit a bump as Gabriel Magalhaes faces a fresh injury concern.

The Brazilian centre-back has been a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s defensive setup this season, forming a rock-solid partnership with William Saliba.

Their partnership has been the cornerstone of Arsenal’s defensive record, with the Gunners conceding only three goals in 12 matches across all competitions. That resilience has fueled their confident start to the campaign.

Gabriel started in Arsenal’s commanding 4-0 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid, even opening the scoring with a powerful header from Declan Rice’s clever free-kick. However, he was substituted with less than 20 minutes to play, sparking immediate concern.

Arteta later confirmed the change was injury-related and that Gabriel’s availability for the weekend remains uncertain.

“Obviously, Big Gabi had to leave the pitch with an issue and he hasn’t been able to train yet,” the Arsenal boss said on Friday. “So, let’s see how he evolves in the next 24 hours, whether he is available or not for the weekend.”

Supporters grew anxious after seeing the Brazilian stretch his thigh during the Atletico game. With Gabriel’s presence so vital to Arsenal’s structure, Arteta must now decide whether to risk him or make defensive adjustments.

The injury setback adds to a growing list of absentees. Captain Martin Odegaard remains sidelined after damaging his medial collateral ligament in the win over West Ham. He is not expected back until after the November international break, having only just recovered from a shoulder issue.

Meanwhile, Noni Madueke and Kai Havertz continue to recover from knee injuries, while long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is still out of action.

There was, however, a glimmer of optimism from Arteta, who provided a positive update on their progress.

“They are all progressing really well,” he said. “They have all started to do certain activities. They are all super willing to be available as quick as possible, but at the moment none of them are yet in contention in the next week or so.”

With injuries piling up, the Gunners’ squad depth will once again be tested as they aim to maintain their momentum in the Premier League title race.
