Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has blamed loss of concentration in defense for his side’s 4-2 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday.
The Seagulls had only lost once in seven previous league meetings with the Red Devils and were riding high on confidence into the match, following early season victories over Manchester City and Chelsea.
Man United, meanwhile, were on the back of two consecutive league wins under Ruben Amorim and were eyeing a third in front of their home fans.
Matheus Cunha opened his account for the club in the 24th minute, driving an effort past Bart Verbuggen in the Brighton goal to give his side the lead.
Casemiro doubled the advantage few minutes later, after his strike took a huge deflection off Yasin Ayari, giving Verbuggen no chance.
“It’s easy to summarise. Too many easy mistakes. We gave the balls away too easy, like this you can’t win the game.
We had control and good actions, always created a danger, but in the end it’s easy mistakes. [The goals are] like four presents”, Fabian Hurzeler lamented after the match.
Bruno Fernandes missed a chance to build Man United’s tally, before Bryan Mbeumo found the back of the net once again with a crisp finish in the 61st minute.
Danny Welbeck reduced the deficit with a stunning free-kick in the 74th minute, while Charalampos Kostoulas added another for Brighton with a header from a corner kick to set up a frantic end to the game.
However, Mbeumo got his second of the game and United’s fourth, scoring with an emphatic finish in stoppage time to seal the victory.
“United pressed well but we have to do the small margins right. We weren’t on the highest level and then we make mistakes”, the Brighton boss continued.
When we were in a structure we didn’t give away many chances, but it was just the mistakes. We decided the game ended in a negative way. The execution was not good enough.”
Man United moved temporarily into the top four ahead of other rounds of fixture after a third consecutive league win, while Brighton dropped to 13th place on the standings.
