Premier League legend Wayne Rooney has pointed fingers at two prominent members of the Liverpool squad amid the ongoing struggles faced by the Merseyside club.
Liverpool’s title defence has taken a serious hit, with the Premier League champions enduring a torrid run of form that has seen them lose four straight league matches and slip to seventh place.
Their latest setback, a 3-2 defeat to Brentford on Saturday, followed earlier losses to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Manchester United, extending what has been a worrying spell for Arne Slot’s side.
The Reds have now become only the fourth reigning Premier League champions to suffer four consecutive defeats, and former Manchester United captain Rooney believes leadership issues are part of the problem.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the five-time Premier League winner questioned the attitude of Liverpool’s senior figures, singling out Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.
“Van Dijk and Salah, they’ve signed new deals but I don’t think they’ve really led that team this season,” he continued.
“I think body language tells you a lot, and I think we’re seeing slightly different body language from the two of them. They are the top two players in that team and if their body language is not right, that affects everyone else.
“I might be wrong on this, but if I was a Liverpool fan or the manager, that would be a big concern for me.”
Liverpool, now seven points off the pace at the summit of the Premier League, must find a way to turn their fortunes around and start winning games again before their rivals pull out of reach.
