Josep Martinez, the backup goalkeeper for Inter Milan, was involved in a fatal road accident on Tuesday morning, which has sent shockwaves through the football community.
Police in the province of Como, Italy, confirmed that an 81-year-old man in an electric wheelchair was struck by Martinez’s car around 9:40 a.m. in the town of Fenegro.
According to initial reports, the wheelchair may have drifted into the path of Martinez’s vehicle while he was travelling to the club training ground in Appiano Gentile.
Martinez reportedly stopped immediately at the scene and attempted to provide assistance. He remained at the location until emergency services arrived, but unfortunately, the man was pronounced dead before medical help could save him.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper was uninjured in the crash but appeared visibly shaken and is undergoing tests, including mandatory checks for alcohol and drugs, as part of the investigation.
In response to the incident, Inter Milan decided to cancel a scheduled press conference for head coach Cristian Chivu ahead of their upcoming Serie A fixture versus Fiorentina. Club officials have not released a formal statement yet, but sources say Martinez is receiving support from the club while the investigation continues.
Martinez joined Inter from Genoa in the summer of 2024 and has made 12 appearances so far. He also earned his only senior cap for Spain in 2021.
The football world is now watching closely as authorities piece together the events that led to this tragic accident and the implications for both the victim’s family and the club involved.
