Carabao: Arsenal’s Nwaneri excited as youngster scores season’s first goal

Ethan Nwaneri celebrated a major milestone as he netted his first goal of the season to help Arsenal book their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

The 18-year-old midfielder opened the scoring in the 57th minute, finishing a sharp first-time effort after being set up brilliantly by Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Bukayo Saka sealed the win on 76 minutes, securing eight straight victories across all competitions and setting up a quarter-final tie against Crystal Palace. It was another confident step forward for Mikel Arteta’s youthful squad.

After the final whistle, Nwaneri praised the group effort, especially with a rotated starting lineup.

“I think we played very well. There were loads of different players playing. It’s a completely new 11, so I think we came together. There were times when we struggled a bit, but I think in the end we did very well and came through with the result,” he said.

The Hale End graduate highlighted his long-standing connection with Lewis-Skelly as key to his goal. The pair have risen through Arsenal’s academy ranks together, and the understanding between them showed in the moment that broke the deadlock.

“Myles and I, from a young age, have always had a good connection — he just sensed me there and I had the instinct that the far post was free. So I’m happy to get a goal.”

Momentum is building fast for the Gunners, and the teenage sensation believes the winning streak is driving confidence throughout the squad as they prepare for big Premier League and Champions League tests.

“I think it gives us good momentum, going into the Premier League and the Champions League. We’re just trying to take each game by itself and hopefully something good can come of it,” he added.

“It’s always nice to score at Emirates Stadium, it feels so good.”

The Gunners march on and their brightest young talents are lighting the way.
