Brighton: Hurzeler rallies behind Welbeck’s England comeback bid

Fabian Hurzeler has thrown his full support behind Danny Welbeck’s hopes of returning to the England squad. The Brighton striker has been in sharp form, scoring five goals in his last four Premier League matches, sparking talk of a possible recall after six years away from the national team.

Welbeck last played for England in 2018, but his recent goalscoring run has reignited belief that the 34-year-old could still deliver on the international stage. Hurzeler made it clear his squad agrees.

“I asked the question to the squad if they think Danny Welbeck can play for England and they all agreed,” Hurzeler said. “That was the only time we’ve mentioned it. Let’s see what happens.”

The Brighton boss is confident Welbeck still has what it takes to compete at the highest level, even as the final decision lies elsewhere.

“I have a big belief that Danny is able to play for England but I always try to emphasise that England has a great coach and he will make the right decisions.”

Meanwhile, Brighton head into Saturday’s showdown with Leeds looking to bounce back after a Premier League defeat to Manchester United and a Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Arsenal. However, Hurzeler remains calm and focused on the bigger picture.

“Every game is important. If you start now not focusing on the results you lose the progress,” he said.

The German coach trusts his squad’s character and unity to respond strongly and get back to winning ways.

“If you focus on things you can control, the results will come. I’m 100 per cent convinced that we have the right characters, the right personalities, the right quality and good togetherness in our group that we are able to get the results long-term.”

With momentum swinging and stakes rising, Welbeck’s England dream and Brighton’s response will be key storylines to watch as the season kicks into gear again.
