Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens recently opened up about how he handles the pressure that comes with representing the Old Trafford giants after enjoying a solid start to life in the Premier League.
Lammens joined Man United from Royal Antwerp at the end of the transfer window and has quickly settled into life at Old Trafford, making three appearances so far.
The towering Belgian marked his debut with a clean sheet against Sunderland, giving the Red Devils their first shutout of the campaign and currently boasts a save percentage of 78.6%, conceding just three goals from the 14 shots on target he’s faced.
Manchester United were reportedly exploring other goalkeeping options, including World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez, before finalising the move for Lammens and since his arrival, the 22-year-old has embraced the challenge of becoming the club’s new number one.
“Of course, you hear from other people there is a lot of pressure coming here and playing for this team,” Lammens told BBC Sport.
“But I welcome that. Firstly, it is nice you can play for such a big team. There should be a lot of pressure – I’m not really scared of it.
Lammens’ impressive debut performance against Sunderland drew the chant “Are you Schmeichel in disguise?” from Man United fans but the young Belgian feels the chant is a compliment he doesn’t deserve yet.
“I don’t listen to it [the chants] too much during the game, but I saw it afterwards.
“I’m not Schmeichel in disguise. I am just Senne Lammens, trying to help the team.
“It is an amazing compliment to get, but you have to be realistic. He is one of the best goalkeepers ever. I have to prove a lot more to be in the same conversation as him.”
