Champions League: Alexander-Arnold talks emotional Liverpool reunion with Real Madrid

Trent Alexander-Arnold says he will always have love for Liverpool, regardless of how he is received when he returns to Anfield with Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The England defender left his boyhood club after the expiration of his contract at the end of last season to join the Spanish powerhouse in the summer.

Arnold, 27, was booed by some of Anfield’s supporters last season after it was announced he would be leaving the club.

The 27-year-old will return to the club for the first time since his departure, as Real Madrid face Liverpool on match-day four of the UEFA Champions League group phase.

“When the draw was announced, I think everyone kind of knew it was going to happen, it was destined for that fixture to come”, Arnold said.

“Obviously they’re a top team so I knew at some point I’d end up going back there or playing against Liverpool. It’s happening so soon. Mixed emotions. I think it’ll be a very, very difficult game but one that I’m excited for.”

Alexander-Arnold has endured an injury-hampered campaign and has been limited to just five appearances for Los Blancos this season.

The Spanish giants were defeated 2-0 when both sides clashed in the league phase last season, although they had won three consecutive meetings before that.

“Whatever way I’m received is the decision of the fans. I’ll always love the club, I’ll always be a fan of the club. I’ll always be thankful for the opportunities and the things we achieved together — they’ll live with me forever”, the 27-year-old continued.

“No matter what, my feelings won’t change towards Liverpool. I’ve got memories there that will last me a lifetime and, no matter how I’m received, that won’t change.”

Real Madrid hope to continue their 100% start to the UCL campaign against Liverpool on Tuesday night, with the home side looking to build on their 5-1 triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt in their last outing.
