Man United legend tips Welbeck for England national team return

Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney believes England boss Thomas Tuchel will “definitely” be considering a recall for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck following his blistering start to the Premier League season.

Welbeck netted his sixth goal in 10 league appearances as Brighton cruised to a 3-0 victory over Leeds United on Saturday, extending his fine scoring streak to five consecutive matches. The 34-year-old’s tally makes him the top-scoring English player in the Premier League so far this campaign.

Welbeck’s six goals in his last five league outings are already two more than he managed across his previous 26 appearances combined. He is currently averaging a goal every 104.5 minutes, a rate bettered by only eight players across Europe’s top five leagues, including Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, whose record of a goal every 58.67 minutes leads the continent.

The veteran forward last represented the Three Lions in a friendly win over Switzerland back in 2018, but Rooney, who shared both the Manchester United and England dressing rooms with Welbeck, believes a return could be on the cards when Tuchel names his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania on Friday.

“He scores goals, he works hard, he’s having a purple patch and he’s put himself in a position where Thomas Tuchel will definitely have to look at him,” Rooney said of Welbeck on The Wayne Rooney Show.

“Behind Harry Kane he is the most in-form England striker. He’s given himself a chance.

“He’s been such a good player in the Premier League. I said last season Manchester United should have brought him back.

“He seems really settled at Brighton, he’s doing well and scoring goals, and I hope he continues that and gives himself the best chance of trying to get back in the England squad.”
