Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has provided a fitness update on Anthony Gordon, who limped off during the club’s Europa League encounter with Athletic Club.
The winger’s role this weekend is now uncertain as both club and country monitor his condition.
“We don’t think it’s a serious injury. We will get him scanned and we’re awaiting the results,” Howe said. “Every chance he misses out on Sunday, but we’ll give him every opportunity to be fit.”
Despite the injury concern, England manager Thomas Tuchel included Gordon in his squad for the upcoming international fixtures against Serbia and Albania.
Howe expressed full cooperation with the national team regarding Gordon’s fitness.
“Relaxed about that [England squad involvement]. It will be done with England’s blessing, whether he’s fit or not. We’ll work together with England to find a solution.
“We are aware that he was subbed twice for minor discomfort, we are in close contact with medical staff in Newcastle. We will take care and we decided to call him up and there is still a chance he is involved on the weekend [for Newcastle]. We will take care of him and not take any unnecessary risks.”
With scans scheduled and treatment underway, Gordon’s availability for the weekend remains in jeopardy. Howe and Tuchel agree that there’s no rush to risk the wide-man.
