Wolves appoint Rob Edwards as new manager following Pereira sack

Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed Rob Edwards as their new head coach, taking over after the departure of Vitor Pereira.

The club announced the former Middlesbrough boss has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal to revive a season that has started disastrously.

The 42-year-old takes charge of a Wolves side currently bottom of the Premier League with just two points from their opening 11 matches and facing a major fight to avoid relegation.

“We need to refresh the whole club with a new coach’s philosophy, bringing his own identity and ideas, and we can build on that. We are at a new chapter for the club and Rob will be a key piece of that,” Jeff Shi, the Executive Chairman explained the appointment’s purpose.

While at Middlesbrough, Edwards had only recently taken the role but was granted permission to talk to Wolves, who agreed a compensation package in the region of £3–4 million. He succeeds Pereira, who was dismissed after a winless start and multiple heavy defeats.

Wolves thanked the former gaffer and his staff for their efforts and wished them well.

Edwards brings familiarity to Molineux: he made over 100 appearances for Wolves as a player between 2004 and 2008 and previously served on their coaching staff.

He will officially take charge from the international break, with his debut scheduled against Crystal Palace on November 22.

Wolves now place their hopes in Edwards to galvanise the squad, deliver new energy and steer the club clear of danger in one of their toughest campaigns in recent memory.
