Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor is ready to push talented midfielder Lexi Potter into a bigger role this season. The teenager made a strong case in the Women’s Champions League win over St. Polten. And now, she is firmly in the coach’s plans.
Potter came off the bench in Austria. She played with confidence from the first touch. She won the ball four times. She completed 39 of her 41 passes. She created two chances. She even tested the goalkeeper with two clean strikes. It was a statement cameo.
“Lexi’s a great young player, with a lot of talent,” said Bompastor. “I think you could see that when she came in on the midweek game. I know how good she can be.”
The Chelsea squad is stacked. Competition is fierce. But Potter’s quality keeps pulling her into the conversation.
“The competition is really high in our Chelsea squad. So probably she doesn’t get the minutes she would like to have, and she deserves to have from her quality,” Bompastor added.
Potter signed a new four-year contract in 2024. Before returning to Chelsea, she grew her game during a two-year loan spell at Crystal Palace. Many young Blues usually go back out on loan. Yet this time, the club wants her close. They see something special.
“I really want her to stay with us for a certain part of the season,” she said. “We need to find a way to give her more room, to make sure she gets more minutes, and she can prove herself on the pitch.”
The Blues believe Potter is ready. She has the engine, the bravery, and the touch. Now, with the coach fully behind her, the road is open. And if she keeps delivering, this might be her breakout campaign.
