Nigeria’s campaign to reach the 2026 World Cup has ended in heartbreak; and Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has issued a heartfelt apology to fans in the wake of it all.
After DR Congo edged Nigeria 4–3 on penalties in the CAF playoff final, Nwabali turned to Instagram to share his pain.
“Painful! We all did our best for the badge though our best wasn’t enough. I was once a fan and understand how it feels giving you a disappointing night, we take full responsibility,” Nwabali wrote on his Instagram handle.
The match, played in Rabat, was one of high tension and high stakes. Nigeria struck first through a deflected shot by Frank Onyeka, but the Leopards hit back before the half via Meschack Elia. After extra time failed to separate the teams, the contest went to a nerve-shredding shootout.
During the shootout, Timothy Fayulu, coming off the bench for DR Congo, made two crucial saves. Chancel Mbemba stepped up to convert the decisive spot kick under pressure — securing a return to the World Cup path for his country.
Nwabali, meanwhile, had done his bit. He denied a header in the final moments of extra time, and did make a save during the penalty shootout; but ultimately, it wasn’t enough. Regardless of the fallout, the shot-stopper’s message struck a chord.
He wasn’t hiding behind his gloves; he owned the moment, the responsibility, and the heartbreak.
For many Nigerian fans, that sincerity may be the only solace they take from what was, ultimately, a cruel end to an all-too-familiar dream until 2030.
