Pep Guardiola is backing Erling Haaland to make Premier League history in the most poetic way possible.
The Manchester City striker sits on 99 league goals and now heads to St James’ Park, the ground where Alan Shearer wrote his legend.
Haaland needs just one more to hit a century faster than anyone, including Shearer himself.
The Norwegian reached 99 from only 108 appearances. Shearer took 124.
This weekend could rewrite that record on the very turf where the Newcastle hero has a statue standing watch. Guardiola knows what it would mean.
“It would be good because that means he’s scored goals!” he said. “Alan Shearer has been so far the greatest top scorer in this league and whatever happens with Erling in his career here, Alan Shearer will still be top (for) his quality to score goals.
“He won the Premier League, but not in the teams that everybody knows.”
Haaland has already scored 14 goals in 11 league games this season. He walks into this match with frightening form and a chance to leave another mark on English football.
