Manchester United are sweating over the fitness of crucial summer signing Matheus Cunha with recent reports suggesting the Brazilian forward may be unavailable for Everton’s visit to Old Trafford on Monday night.
The Red Devils suffered an unexpected setback after Cunha pulled out of a scheduled appearance at Altrincham’s Christmas lights switch-on, where he was due to feature alongside Coronation Street actor Sam Aston.
Event organisers later released a statement confirming his withdrawal, saying: “Unfortunately Matheus Cunha has had an accident in training today and will not be able to attend tonight’s Christmas Lights Switch on in Altrincham due to medical reasons.”
Cunha’s no-show quickly sparked concern, with The Athletic reporting the forward had picked up “a minor knock.” Another report noted that although the issue is not considered serious, the Brazilian is now “a doubt” for Monday night’s Premier League clash.
This comes as a major blow for Ruben Amorim and Manchester United as the former Wolverhampton Wanderers forward has done well to establish himself as a very important member of the Red Devils attack.
While his output in terms of goals and assists haven’t been all that impressive, Cunha’s versatility means he’s capable of leading the line in United’s attacking trio or dropping deeper to occupy one of the two number 10 positions.
The Brazil international has become Man United’s creative engine, keeping the midfield and forward line connected and prevents the imbalances that plagued the team for much of last season.
As preparations for Everton’s visit ramp up, Amorim will be hoping one of his most capable soldiers can shake off setback and be ready to feature at Old Trafford.
