Brighton’s Hurzeler backs Welbeck for England World Cup spot

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler says Daniel Welbeck has a strong chance of earning a spot in England’s 2026 World Cup squad if he maintains his current form.

Welbeck, 34, has made 42 appearances for the Three Lions scoring 16 times, but has not played for the side since 2018.

The former Manchester United forward continued his impressive form with another goal in Brighton’s 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday, taking his season’s tally to seven in 12 appearances.

The 34-year-old will fancy his chances of making the highly-competitive squad as backup for first choice center-forward Harry Kane.

I had a discussion with him and an exchange about the situation

Some decisions you can’t control or can’t influence, so he should really focus on the things he can influence and that’s how he performs for us.

The England forward made his debut for the senior team in a friendly match against Ghana in 2011 and scored his first goal in a 1-0 win over Belgium almost a year later.

“It is not only scoring goals. For me it is how he works and how he is a leader on the pitch. I am sure if he continues doing that, he has a big chance

The Seagulls continued their rise up the standings with a comeback 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday.

Igor Thiago opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first half, until Welbeck pulled one back for Brighton in the second half.

Jack Hinshelwood then completed the comeback with another strike in the 84th minute.

The visitors were awarded a second spot-kick later in the game, but Bart Verbruggen saved Igor Thiago’s effort this time around to seal the win.

Welbeck will hope to continue his scoring run in Brighton’s next clash against Nottingham Forest next Sunday.
