Alexander Isak finally announced himself in Liverpool colours, and he did it in style. The striker fired home the opener as Liverpool beat West Ham United 2–0 on Sunday, ending a miserable run of three consecutive defeats for Arne Slot’s side.
Liverpool pushed forward from the restart and eventually found the breakthrough right on the hour. Cody Gakpo cut the ball back with precision, and Isak finished clinically to give the Reds the lead. It was the summer signing’s first Premier League goal for the club, and it arrived at a crucial moment.
After the game, Isak made no attempt to hide what the milestone meant to him.
“I’m aware that it’s been a long time coming,” he told Sky Sports. “I’ve been trying to get back to my best form and I’m still on the way. But I’m happy to have that goal.”
The Reds carried that energy through the rest of the match. They kept pressing, kept fighting, and eventually sealed the points deep into stoppage time. This time Gakpo turned finisher, smashing in the second to put the match beyond West Ham’s reach.
Isak admitted the moment carried mixed emotions.
“It’s a mix [of feelings], of course. The most important [and] best feeling today is that we won the game, that’s the best way to get a good spirit within the group, and that’s helpful for the individual as well. But, of course I’m a striker, so scoring goals will always help me.”
The win offers the Merseyside outfit a much-needed lift as they head into a busy stretch. Sunderland visit Anfield on Wednesday before a tough trip to Leeds United next Saturday. Slot’s side will need sharpness and discipline to stay on track.
He added: “I think we have to use this win in a good way. But also be humble, because we’ve had a tough time. One win doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re back, we have to stay focused and keep working hard to keep this momentum.”
For Liverpool, it wasn’t just three points. It was a restart. And for the Swedish international, it might just be the spark his season has been waiting for.
