Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister has backed teammate Florian Wirtz, insisting he has no doubt about his teammate quality ahead of their showdown with Sunderland on Wednesday.
The German star joined the Reds in the summer in a £116 million deal, but has struggled to adapt to life since his arrival.
The 22-year-old has come under criticism for several underwhelming performances for the Premier League champions and is without a goal or an assist in 12 league matches.
However, he delivered arguably his best performance since his move to the club in last Sunday’s 2-0 win over West Ham United.
The forward played 75 minutes of the clash and played a part in their opener, giving a disguised pass to Cody Gakpo who laid the assist for Alexander Isak’s strike.
“I think there’s no doubt about his quality. What he can do in small spaces, it’s amazing. And he did it today. As I said, I think it was a really good performance from him and hopefully he can keep going like this”, the Argentine revealed.
Gakpo added a late second as Liverpool ended a run of defeats with a much-needed victory at the London Stadium.
The win was their first in four matches and a second in their last eight league matches.
“Really happy for him”, Mac Allister said about Isak’s first EPL goal for the club.
“I think he’s an amazing player, we all know that. I was joking with him because he doesn’t even smile when he scores. I’m really happy because he deserves it, the same for Florian. I think he did a really good game. He played really good.
“[Isak] is very quiet. He likes to be on his own sometimes. You can see that I just try to speak to him because his Spanish is quite good as well. But yeah, he’s a quiet guy and we are all happy to have him here”, he continued.
Liverpool welcome high-flying Sunderland to Anfield on Wednesday night as they hope to build on their win in the previous match-day.
