Emiliano Buendía struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Aston Villa snatched a last-gasp 2–1 victory over Arsenal in Saturday’s early kickoff in the English Premier League.
The game looked set to be heading for a stalemate until the Argentine, who had come in earlier as a substitute found the back of the net to claim maximum points for his side.
The home side headed into the clash in fine form after a poor start to the season, same as the visitors who had only lost once in the league this season.
The Gunners started the game without both of their centre-back pairing, while Cristhian Mosquera also suffered an injury that would sideline him for almost two months.
The game started off well and the first big chance of the match fell to Ollie Watkins, who was denied by a magnificent save by David Raya in the visitors goal.
Eberechi Eze found the back of the net after a slick move, but was denied by the offside flag against Bukayo Saka in the buildup.
Villa took the lead in the 36th minute as Matty Cash ghosted past Eze to slot in through the legs of Raya, as the home side led one goal up into the break.
Mikel Arteta rang the changes and his side were back on level terms after the break as substitute Leandro Trossard finished home from a Saka’s cut-back.
Both sides pushed for the winner, but it was Aston Villa who grabbed the opportunity with virtually the last kick of the game as Buendia scored after a goalmouth scramble.
It was the Argentina forward’s third goal as a substitute in the English Premier League this season, the most of any player.
Aston Villa grabbed all three points and moved up to 30 points, three behind Arsenal who suffered their second league defeat of the season.
