Luis Enrique says he is excited by the fierce battle shaping up at the top of Ligue 1, insisting Paris Saint-Germain are feeding off the pressure as they chase another domestic title.
Enrique’s men looked sharp and motivated in their 5-0 demolition of Rennes at the Parc des Princes, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia bagging a brace and Senny Mayulu, Ibrahim Mbaye and Goncalo Ramos also finding the net.
The victory extended PSG’s remarkable run of scoring in 40 straight home league games, a stretch that has produced 104 goals, the longest in the club’s Ligue 1 history.
It also handed Rennes their heaviest league defeat since a 6-0 loss at Nancy back in August 2005. Yet even with such dominance, Les Parisiens did not finish the weekend at the summit.
Lens remain one point ahead after edging Nantes 2-1 on Saturday to record their fifth consecutive win while Marseille and Lille are both within four points of PSG.
Also in the picture is Lyon, who could close to within six points should they beat Lorient on Sunday. For Luis Enrique, all these moving pieces only add to the excitement.
Speaking to Ligue 1+, the Spaniard said…”It was practically perfect. We deserved the victory. Rennes played very well, they don’t really deserve this result.
“We really like going through hardship, we are a team used to that. “If there are more teams motivated to play for the title, that’s perfect. It’s a source of motivation for us.”
Heading into week, PSG will now turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League, where they also occupy second place on the league phase standings.
A trip to Athletic Club’s San Mames stadium is on the horizon and the reigning European champions will be looking make it five wins from six games and edge closer to automatic qualification for the knockout phase.
