Ancelotti issues blunt Neymar verdict after latest Brazil omission

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has cast serious doubt over Neymar’s chances of featuring at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after leaving the veteran forward out of his latest squad list.

The Italian tactician, now six months into his reign as Selecao boss, announced a 26-man squad ahead of Brazil’s upcoming friendly matches against African opponents Senegal and Tunisia.

Despite making a long-awaited return to action for Santos over the weekend, Neymar was once again overlooked, a decision that immediately raised eyebrows among fans and reporters alike.

When questioned about the omission, Ancelotti gave a typically straightforward explanation, suggesting that the 33-year-old may no longer have the physical edge needed at the highest level.

“I haven’t talked to Neymar,” Ancelotti admitted. “We’ll see when he can recover and start playing again.

“I’m not taking a player that lacks intensity to play the whole World Cup — no chance. We need players operating at a top physical level.”

Neymar’s international career has been blighted by recurring injuries, the most serious of which came in October 2023 when he suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.

Since then, his time on the pitch has been limited, with repeated setbacks stalling his recovery and rhythm.

With Brazil now entering a new era under Ancelotti, one that thrives off youth and energy, Neymar’s path back to the national team appears increasingly uncertain.

Unless the forward can rediscover his form and fitness quickly, his dream of playing at a fourth World Cup could be slipping away.
