Everton’s Gueye apologizes for misconduct after win over Man United

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye has apologized to his teammates after being sent off for misconduct in the club’s 1-0 win over Manchester United on Monday night.

The Senegalese midfielder received his marching orders in the 13th minute after he was sent off for striking teammate Michael Keane following an altercation.

Gueye was involved in an argument with Keane, before appearing to strike the defender after he was pushed away twice, before Jordan Pickford separated the pair.

In a statement released on social media, the 36-year-old apologized to teammates and supporters for his behavior during the clash, as he now faces up to three games out due to suspension.

“I want to apologise first to my team-mate Michael Keane, I take full responsibility for my reaction. I also apologise to my team-mates, the staff, the fans and the club.

What happened does not reflect who I am or the values I stand for. Emotions run high but nothing justifies such behaviour. I’ll make sure it never happens again”, he said on instagram.

Despite being a man down, Everton went on to seal a memorable 1-0 win and clinch David Moyes’ first win at Old Trafford in his managerial career.

The Toffees took a shock lead in the 29th minute through a stunning effort from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall after the Man United defense struggled to clear their lines.

The Red Devils dominated the game afterwards, but could not get past Jordan Pickford in the visitors goal.

Goalscorer Dewsbury-Hall also spoke on the bizarre incident after the game, claiming the situation has been dealt with.

“It was just a moment of madness. It was obviously avoidable. All I can say is Idrissa apologised to us all at half-time and said his piece. That’s all he can do and we move on from it.

The reaction from the lads after it was unbelievable, top tier. We could’ve easily crumbled, gone in on ourselves and lost the game comfortably, but it probably made us grow even more as a team”, the former Chelsea midfielder added.

“The manager just said he would deal with the situation another time and it was just about keeping to the plan that we had. He just wanted us to continue what we were doing and focus on the things we can change.”

Everton play host to Newcastle United in next weekend, while Manchester United visit Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace.
