Martin O’Neill confirms final Celtic bow as Nancy era looms

Martin O’Neill has announced that his final game in charge of Celtic will be Wednesday’s clash with Dundee, as Wilfried Nancy prepares to step into the Parkhead hot seat.

The 73-year-old’s second spell began in October after Brendan Rodgers resigned, but his short return is now officially reaching the finish line.

O’Neill joked about the situation but made it clear the decision has been sealed.

“You will be relieved to know that this is definitely it for tomorrow evening, so I’ve been assured of it by the board,” he said. “A young gentleman’s coming in and it’s over to him.”

Before he hands over, he has one more huge task. Celtic can hit the top of the Premiership with a win if Hearts slip against Kilmarnock. O’Neill knows the job won’t be straightforward.

“But obviously, we’ve got the big, big game here tomorrow evening and obviously, I’d like to try and win it if we can. It won’t be easy. Dundee did this a few weeks ago, so we’ve got a bit of a job in our hands.”

His impact has been instant. Celtic have won all four Premiership matches under the Northern Irishman and booked a place in the League Cup final after beating Rangers.

They now sit two points behind Hearts with a game in hand, a remarkable turnaround after trailing by eight before Rodgers’ exit.

“The nice thing about the players is that they have responded and they’ve shown a willingness to try and implement some of the things that I think are important about the game,” he said with a smile. “Some have maybe even been reluctant to do it, I don’t know. I’m joking.

“They’ve been great, obviously, and I couldn’t praise them highly enough. We’ve got one more game to go, for me. They’ve got big, big matches ahead, and those games are really important to them. The response has been terrific.”

The gaffer now aims to sign off with one more win before Celtic shift into the Wilfried Nancy era.
